Sources and bibliography

A reference section with books, studies and materials for a deeper understanding of Basque mythology and folklore.

Many versions, reliable sources

At Lurkaia, we believe that sharing Basque mythology must be done with the greatest respect for original sources. Every article, profile and legend we publish is supported by recognised reference works, academic studies and documentary materials that help us distinguish between popular tradition, literary reinterpretation and modern simplification.

Our main source of reference is the monumental work of José Miguel de Barandiaran, considered the father of Basque ethnography. His decades of fieldwork, gathering testimonies, legends and beliefs directly from villages and valleys, are essential for understanding the Basque mythological universe with depth and context.

Alongside Barandiaran, we also rely on other researchers and works of high academic rigour:

Important note: Basque mythology is a living tradition transmitted mainly through oral memory. This means that many legends have legitimate variants depending on the region, the valley or even the farmhouse where they were preserved. At Lurkaia we do not seek to impose a single rigid version, but to explain the most documented forms and point out their main differences whenever possible.

We also consult publications from Eusko Ikaskuntza, the collections of the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country, and academic articles published in specialist journals on folklore, anthropology, ethnography and the history of religions.

Our goal is that every piece of information published on Lurkaia can be verified and contrasted with original sources. If you spot an error or know additional materials that could enrich our content, we invite you to contact us.
