Our mission

Lurkaia was born with a clear purpose: to become a digital meeting point for everyone fascinated by the cultural richness of Euskal Herria. In an increasingly globalised world, we believe it is essential to preserve and share the stories, symbols and traditions that shape a community?s identity.

Our name, ?Lurkaia?, evokes the land (lur) and the home, reminding us that every culture has roots in a specific place, in a landscape that gives shape to the stories and beliefs of those who live there. The mountains, valleys, forests and caves of the Basque Country are not only scenery: they are also memory, myth and cultural heritage.

What we do

At Lurkaia we research, gather and present, in an accessible and engaging way, everything related to:

• Basque mythology: the gods, spirits and fantastic beings of the Basque pantheon.
• Legends: orally transmitted stories that reflect popular wisdom and local memory.
• Traditions: festivals, rituals and customs that are still alive today.
• Mythical places: the landscapes and sites where many of these legends unfold.
• Rural sports: the herri kirolak that remain an essential part of Basque identity.
