About Lurkaia
A cultural project focused on Basque mythology, collective memory and the landscapes of Euskal Herria.
Our mission
Lurkaia was created to share Basque mythology with rigour and closeness, so this heritage does not fade with time. We want the stories, beings and symbols of the Basque and Navarrese imagination to remain alive and accessible to anyone who wishes to understand them better.
At Lurkaia we bring together tales, characters and beliefs from the Basque world, with all their local variants and nuances, to offer a clear and trustworthy gateway into this universe. We care both about what is told and about where it comes from: oral tradition, historical memory, ethnography and the landscapes that still preserve these stories.
This project has only just begun, and we are building it step by step. Our resources are limited, but the intention is clear and the commitment is firm.
Our aim is to preserve and share this knowledge in an orderly and understandable way, explaining contexts, clarifying terms, and distinguishing what belongs to popular transmission from what comes from studies and documented sources.
Lurkaia also wants to be a showcase for people who create from this heritage: writers, musicians, illustrators, artisans, educators and cultural projects inspired by Basque mythology and culture.
We hope to build a community: a place to discover, learn and share, where mythology is not only ?ancient history' but a living cultural language that still inspires. If Lurkaia helps someone feel more curiosity, pride or connection with this heritage, the effort will already have been worthwhile.
