The legend
The Lamiak always hide their feet beneath the clear waters of rivers or under long dresses that trail across the ground. Some say they have duck feet, others chicken feet, and still others the tail of a fish instead of legs. Whoever sees their feet discovers their true supernatural nature.
A young fisherman fell hopelessly in love with a Lamia who lived in the river near his village. She returned his affection just as intensely, but imposed a single condition: never, under any circumstance, was he to look beneath the water where she submerged her feet. For years they lived happily beside the river.
But one summer day, when the sun shone brightly and the waters were clearer than ever, curiosity overcame the fisherman. While she slept by the bank, he bent down and peered beneath the transparent water. What he saw left him frozen: instead of human feet, she had the webbed feet of a duck.
The Lamia awoke with a start and, seeing the betrayal reflected in her lover?s eyes, slowly plunged into the depths of the river. She never appeared again, and the fisherman spent the rest of his life waiting for her on the shore, mourning the single promise he had failed to keep.

The lamias and the bird feet they never reveal by the river
Among all the physical traits that define the Lamiak in Basque tradition, bird feet are the most constant and revealing. Wherever these river beings with long hair and golden combs appear, their webbed feet remain hidden beneath water, under long skirts or behind a carefully chosen stone.
The accidental discovery of that trait marks the abrupt end of the enchantment. Once a mortal sees the duck feet of a Lamia, the being disappears without possibility of return, as if the breaking of the secret instantly cancelled the tacit bond that had made the relationship possible.

This pattern, in which a physical secret upholds a supernatural relationship, appears in many cultures, but in the Basque tradition it takes on a particularly elegant form. The bird feet are not a shameful defect but a sign of otherness, a reminder that the Lamia belongs to a different order of existence.
