Elusive mountain beings
Intxixu(k) are small elusive beings that inhabit the most remote areas of the Basque mountains. They play heavy tricks on shepherds and distracted walkers in the mist, making them walk in circles or lose themselves among the trails.
They are never fully seen, but their presence is felt in every crack of the forest. Their games can mislead travellers for hours until sunrise. They are mischievous rather than evil, and those who know their paths learn to treat them with caution and respect.

The name Intxixu seems to have an onomatopoeic origin, perhaps linked to the sounds of laughter or whistles attributed to them in Basque mountains and forests.
These small spirits dwell in hidden places on the mountain, delighting in disorienting night travellers. Their mocking laughter is heard through the mist of the mountains on moonless nights.
Intxixu belongs to the oldest layer of Basque mythology and can be understood as a hidden being of hills and forests.
