The principle of good

Atarrabi is the luminous son of Mari and Sugaar, embodying goodness and ancestral wisdom in Basque tradition. He escaped from his mother's dark cave through wit and intelligence, making his way into the world of humans.

He represents moral order, justice and harmony with nature. Together with his twin brother Mikelats, he forms the essential duality of the Basque cosmos, where light and darkness coexist in tension.

Etymology

The name Atarrabi is preserved in the legend of the twin sons of Mari and Sugaar. It is associated with brightness, intelligence and the beneficial side of cosmic balance.

Atarrabi belongs to the oldest layer of Basque mythology and can be understood as the luminous brother who escapes dark knowledge.

Atarrabi and the road toward the light

La mitología vasca contiene un intrigante modelo dual sobre el bien y el mal articulado a través de dos deidades casi gemelas que son presuntamente hijos varones, o apadrinados adoptados en las leyendas posteriores a la llegada del catolicismo a la zona, de la propia Diosa Mari. El primero de ellos, Atarrabi (a menudo vinculado localmente a sincretismos con *Axular*, aunque etnográficamente diferente), encarna el intelecto positivo, la predisposición innata al orden universal y el principio humanista del bien absoluto.

La puerta umbría se cerró de manera implacable aprisionando inexorablemente... a su triste sombra, logrando dejar libre a Atarrabi a cambio de no poseer nunca más sombra silueta sobre suelo soleado. Como ser incorrupto de naturaleza noble, se erigió por siempre en guardián desinteresado sobre los devocionarios aldeanos frente a las inclemencias conjuradas por el despechado hermano Mikelats.
